The objectives of the CRST are to:

- Assess Sri Lanka tourism data needs and systems
- Obtain stakeholder commitment
- Encourage expert statistical advice
- Develop innovative and collaborative approaches
- Formulate research programs
- Produce monthly tourism bulletins, including trend analysis, from national, international, and industry sources that focus on standardization and benchmarking
- Organize and hold workshops and symposia for stakeholders
- Produce reports on
- Sustainability
- Market intelligence
- Carrying capacity
- Tourism for peace building and rehabilitation
- Maintain a website with relevant data for decision making
- Produce monthly e-news letters
- Provide magazines with activities, trends, news from the region and developing in the external environment which is relevant to Srilanka and South Asia.
- Establishing tourism satellite account system (TSA) to calculate input/ output of tourism industry.
- Work with industry members to gather information and data relevant to tourism investments.
- Gather market intelligence and collect tourism news based on the report compiled by USAID in 2006
- Coordinate and promote the implementation of sustainable tourism practices
- Act as a tourism resource center as per tourism investment/ training and destination volunteer / mentors in order to execute the aforementioned tasks
